Hello readers,
Today I am going to talk a little about punk. Punk is often said to be started by The Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground was said to be one of the most influencial bands in the 20th century. They made a totally different music for its time. They started out as a rockband but it became more like a prepunk band. I also do believe they had a lot of influence on modern punk as a number of factors are often seen back in punk. A few examples of this are the loud lyrics and distortion sounds that are recognized in pretty much every punk song. David Bowie was also said to have a lot of infleunce on punk. However I think he had less influence on punk compared to The Velvet Underground. He did though introduce some new sounds with influences from other genres such as disco and funk that were later recognized again in the punk genre.
Besides these artists there were also other elements that helped the development of punk. One of the most prominent elements I think is just the social factor of the youth turning against society. Artists were trying out new things that were totally against the music that was already made. It containted a lot of distortion and is generally refered to as being a little choatic.
Personally though I have to say that I do not really like punk. I think it is just another way of the youth trying to do everything that is disliked by the society. I do not like the music as to me it sounds like people screaming in my ears. However I do really like the idea of showing your ideas through music in a non violent way.

Similairities between different artists
Hey everyone,
Over the past few decades, the world has been introduced to a large number of amazing artits. One of these artists in my opinion is James Brown. James Brown was able to combine a series of elements from among other the Blues and Gospel. This is clearly seen in his performance on the T.A.M.I Show. Which in my opinion is one of his best performances of all time. He sings a little like Ray Charles too. Especcially in his style of music. Ray Charles was a blues singer and James Brown music is a little similair to this. The music for this song also shows its similarities to the motown sound. One of the most distinctive features being the use of a melodic electric bass. One other prominent feature is the call and response style used in some parts of the song, which is both used in motown songs often as well as with gospel songs. He shows some differences though. motown was known for its use of a tamburine to accent the black beat and this is not really present in this song.

Another opinion
Howdy dear readers,
As you all may know, last week I clearly stated my opinion about the destruction of instruments in various performances. Well today I am going to do it a little different. I am forming the opposite opinion about the whole deal, so enjoy:
I am really shocked by the performances of 'The Who' and 'Jimmi Hendrixs'in which they destroy their instruments. It is a waste of money to just destroy a perfectly well instrument just to give the audience a performance. An instrument other people might always have dreamt about of owning, destroyed in seconds just to give the audience something exciting to look at. Why can't those musicians just come up with a less controversial way of attracting the interest of people. It is a total shame they have to do this by just letteraly throwing money away. Ok thats it, please take in account that this is not my real opinion. See you next week with another blog post!

Some Crazy Clips
Howdy everyone,
It's sunday, which means a new blog post! Today I am going to talk a little about two clips I have found on the internet. The famous performance of 'The Who' which included the incident with the explosives and the performance by Jimmi Hendrixs performing Wild Thing in Monterey in 1967. Both clips were quite 'different' for that time. Smashing guitars on the ground, setting guitars to fire and destroying amplifiers was all part of the job. Now some people think that this is extremely offensive but I actually think it is great. Both clips contain artists that are totally being one with their music. That they destroy a thing or two in their performance is just part of that. Besides that, they also try to get some attention from the public and this is a way in which they could do this. They did not harm anyone with this and succeeded in their goals so who is there to stop them. On stage we see artists that feel totally liberated and able to destroy anything without it haveing consequences. Anyways, people may think a lot of things about it but one thing is certain, these guys made a heck of a show!

80 DB
Hey everyone,
It has been a long time since my last post but I am back with a very interesting story. Every year, a concert is organized on my school in which all the musical talents can show their skills to friends and family. 2 weeks ago this concert also took place. I am not really a musical talent so I only participated in one wildcard. Also I filmed the whole concert for three days so I am quite aware of what took place and what it was like. The wildcard in which I participated was really bad as expected, but that's what wildcards are for. We sung 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' by The Clash. Anyway I thought that the quality of the rest of the performances overall was quite good. Of course there were some exeptions like freshmans sining songs by the Spice Girls. Also there were some exeptionally well performed songs. Songs like 'Son of a Preacher Men' were, in my opinion, performed really well. There are some things that I did not like about the evening though. Firstly, the concert took 4 hours, way too long I think. Also the presentation was really 'stiff' and studied. Other than that, the sound equipment was really bad which caused an overall lack of audio quality. In the end however, I think that the evening was quite fun but there are some things to work on for next year.

Religion Rap
Hey everyone,
Today, as part of a history test, I had to make a rap about the different religions in the world with my group of five. It was really funny because there was also a real rapper who came to explain us what rapping is all about and how it is done. It was a nice, educational afternoon that showed me another part of music.

Rock 'n Roll Baby!
lately, we have been watching a very cool documentary about Elvis Presley in music class. It was really interesting and showed a lot of things about his life. I have learned a lot about why he became so famous and the situation in that time in America. For example the fact that Elvis Presley mainly became as famous as he was, just because he was white and could sing like a black man. In the time of Elvis Presley, black people were discriminated a lot. The music that the black people made was good, but listening to it was quite not done, so not a lot of people did. Elvis however had the ability to sing like a black man but he was white himself. The documentary also showed the roots of Rock and Roll. Rock and Roll initially turned out to be a combination of blues and country music. In a way it also origined from the music of the black people called 'Race music'. I also learned that Rock and Roll had a big impact on the racial tension between black and white people. This was mainly due to the fact that young white and black people liked rock and roll and so they were connected in a way. I can't remember the name of the documentary but I will ask my music teacher and as soon as I know, I will let you guy's know.
Music playing test

OK so some time ago I had to do a performing test for music class. I was in a group of 5 people and we had to play 'funkytown'. It was very interesting, because I have never played a piece of music togheter with a group. It didn't went really well because of that reason but we did get an 8/10 for our performance. It was also nice to see other people in my music class, who are really good musicians, play in their very own way. We had to judge each other for the grades and this made me look totally different at the music. I had to really be objective to people and try to see what was good and bad about the piece they performed. I found it really nice though that we could grade each others ourselves because in the end it gives a much more objective grade. Normally only one person, the teacher, would grade it but music can be liked or disliked personally for many reasons.I doubt though that everyone was really fair in grading. Overall all the grades were really high and I think that is due to the fact that nobody wants to hurt anyone. Giving a friend a bad grade isn't really nice. It was easier though to grade as a complete rubric was given to us in advance, so we could look exactly what level a certain group had reached.

Excursion to Zwolle
Hi dudes,
Ok so some time ago, I went on this awasome trip with my music class to Zwolle. We went to see my music teacher, Mr. Weisser, and an opera that he composed. It turned out only about 10 of my classmates showed up but we had an amazing time. We went there with the wife of my music teacher and she turned to be really nice. It was really funny because I went to Zwolle with a really bad feeling, I thought it would be boring as I am not into Opera. However when I actually saw the opera, I thought it was quite interesting and enjoyable to watch. I found it great to see a style of music that I am totally new to. There were only two main characters who both sung in German so I didn't really get the story but the music was just fantastic.Oh and after the performance we ate at some restaurant and it was also very pleasant.

It was shown in the 'Stads Schouwburg' in Utrecht and performed by the 'Noord Nederlands Toneel'. It was quite cool as they made a modern version of the original Dantes Inferno. This play was about a refugee trying to get into Holland. You should really go and check it out some time...
